The general principle of shell and tube heat exchangers is based on tubes that run through shells. Thereby heat is transferred. The tubes and shells are filled with different liquids or gases. The liquids or gases never come into contact with each other.

The shell is a large pressure vessel that will stand high pressure and high temperatures. Some shell and tube heat exchangers can cool a vapor to condense it into a liquid or heat a liquid to boil it into a gas.
